The alarm went off at 5.00 am so I was up, a cup of tea and we were out on the tracks. We drove around seeing the odd Fox and large birds, some through the thermal. We saw Howler monkeys and lots of Capybara then, as we were driving along, Nick shouted Jaguar, Sarah got on top, we started running and stumbling along the track. At one point I stopped and thought I would be better watching it, than chasing it. The Jaguar walked along the edge of a pool, walked in front of a tree and then turned and made its way into a gulley and out of sight. Nick drove Sarah and the car up to where we were and we hung around for a bit but it didn’t re-appear so we made our way back to the camp, stopping for a few birds, washed up and gathered for. Huge breakfast.
After breakfast we set out again, targeting Jaguarundi. We had Capuchin monkeys and a few birds before another shout of Jaguar. We ran along the track and could see it walking along the edge of a field. The car caught up with us and we drove to where there was a crossroads. The Jaguar had walked up onto the track, walk along the track and turned the corner and was walking away from us. We stopped to watch, then it turned and went through the edge so we went down the track on the right and waited for it to emerge, which it did, walking along the field edge before turning into the forest and disappearing. Amazing views.
We slowly made our way back to camp for a siesta before a late lunch. Lunch was around 3.00 and then we set off out for our afternoon/evening drive. We drove around focussing on best areas for Jaguarundi. Along the way we saw 15 Crab-eating foxes, Capybaras with young, Squirrel Monkeys and three Capuchins. Driving through some tall vegetation, a suddenly call had us looking at a Tapir, the large animal surged through the lush vegetation across the track and through the canal and climbed the bank, into the forest. Just before we got back we had a lovely sloth in a tree.
We then ate our dinner, went to our tents and crashed out ready for the morning.
