5.30 breakfast for a visit to a close pool. We parked beside the road and took a footpath into the forest. There wasn’t much bird life but John found a Slaty-backed Antshrike that most people managed to see. On the way we found a very delicate orchard in flower. The pool had a grassy island in the middle with lots of aquatic vegetation. Along the back there was a Wattled Jacana, with a grey-cowled Rail pottering about. On the water there was a party of Least Grebes and a lone duck. A Olivaceous Wood-creeper flew in over our heads and foraged up a tree trunk and a Cream-backed Woodpecker flew into some trees at the back of the pond.
After about half an hour we started back along the path with a couple of stops for birds as we went.
We drove back to base, finished packing, loaded up,the cars and set off back towards Santa Cruz. We had a couple of foxes on the way and a pair of Toco Toucans flew along and settled in a tree.
A couple of stops along the road for views and a pair of Red-legged Seriemas, then we squeezed in a quick visit to the church at San Jose. It was a Jesuit mission there were also some Blue-crowned Parakeets in the area in front of the church. We then drove round to La Posivitano for lunch. There were several birds in the garden including Bay-winged Thrush, Creamy-bellied Thrush, Chopi Blackbird, Saffron Finch and a Glittering-bellied Hummer.
We set off on the 4 hour drive back to Santa Cruz. Along the way we managed to see among the usual Vultures and doves, Maguira Stork, Rheas, Capabara, Sharp shinned Hawk, Toco Toucan, Western Cattle Egrets and American Kestrel.
As we got nearer to Santa Cruz we began to see Yellow-chevroned Parakeets and we were soon pulling up at the Hilton Hampton, unloading, booking in and going to our rooms for a shower ready for supper. We went back to the AMI and had a nice meal, then we returned and turned in.
