Saturday 16th August - back to Santa Cruz.

A slight change today as we had breakfast at 5.30 before going out, to give the staff time to dismantle the camp and pack everything up before our drive back to Santa Cruz. Our first stop was a row of trees where we had great views of Azara’s Night Monkeys. We then drove around many of the tracks we’d driven before with the usual birds, but we did find some Spix’s Guans, as well as a different Great Pottoo as well as the one we’d had yesterday, on the same branch as it was before. We also had a flock of Cobalt-rumped Parakeets.

It was a very relaxed few hours, before heading back to camp, packing up, taking group photos and taking our leave before the long drive back to Santa Cruz. The election tomorrow means that we probably need to back in town before 5.00pm and we had to add an extra day as everything is shut and there is no travelling allowed at all.

The first 60 kms of the drive back we were on dirt roads and took about 2 hours.  We drove to the Chevere Restaurant for lunch which was a salad starter, a massive breaded chicken with chips and rice.

The rest of the drive took about 1 ½ hours and we were back at the  Hilton Honours and room 505. I removed all my clothes, had a lovely shower, sorted out the dirty clothes and went down to the lobby to find out how to get the washing done. You get 2 tokens, one for washing, one for drying and I had to go back for some soap. I set it washing and went back to sort some stuff out before going back around 45 minutes later. The cycle had finished but the clothes were covered in dusty stripes and the whites were a shade of desert sand. I went down to the lobby, showed the girl the mess and she gave me another token for the machine. I set it going while we went for supper, ending up in the Aviator next door, which was a bit loud, having tried a couple of other places. Some of the group wanted alcohol but, because of the election no alcohol was being sold. After dinner we went back along the street for tea/coffee and cake before heading back to the hotel. I retrieved my washing, which looked better but still had muddy streaks on some of the clothes so I took the whole lot out, took it back to my room, shoved it in the bath and rinsed it all in water. I wrung it out, shook it and hung it in various places around the bathroom. The state of the water and the bath was awful. The water was brown and the bath bottom was covered in wet mud.
