A layin this morning meeting up at 6.30 for breakfast before driving to La Fortunate. The weather deteriorated with rain and wind. We started off along a gravel road through some great scenery. Seeing some movement in the gardens we stopped and had an amazing hour of birds flitting in and out of the trees and gardens, including American and Slate-throated Redstart, Red-legged Honeycreeper, Baltimore Oriole and Yellow-throated Euphonia with Blue and White Swallows overhead. We left with a lovely rainbow filling the valley ahead.
We made several stops including a bridge and bus stop where we had good, if brief, views of White-throated Magpie-jay, excellent views of Fasciated Tiger Heron and the usual tanagers.
For lunch we stopped at a restaurant, El Ronchal, that had banana feeders where Montezuma's Oropendulas, Palm Tanagers, Blue-grey Tanagers, Buff-throated and Grayinsh Saltators and Black-striped and Orange-billed Sparrows fed on the fruit.
We drove on round the lake stoppping for Great Egrets and Anhingas before stopping at the dam where Swallows swooped around. We decided to drive round the Arenal loop stopping off wherever we saw some activity. We saw Southern Lapwing, the only ones of the trip, which were unfortunately a little distant but fine in the scope. Our target was Keel-billed Motmot but although we heard one it didn't appear. Alan did find a great Potoo roosting on a old, dead branch, which excited Luis and we also saw Long-billed Hermit in the flowers.
We drove on to the Hotel EcoArenal which had great grounds and found our rooms with a balcony.
After dinner in La fortuna we gathered to do the log and managed to get locked on the balcony. We were eventually rescued to discover that the keys were in the door and Brenda could have let us out.
On the wall of the balcony we found a lovely little Glass Frog and there were frogs calling all around the ground.
David went out with a torch and met up with a security guard who showed him a Grey Four-eyed Opossum peering down from a branch which he then showed me. No luck with anything else, though.
